History of Merkur International University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe

Merkur International University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe opened its doors to students for the first time in winter semester 2005/2006. Since winter semester 2008/2009 sixteen full-time professors, three visiting professors and over 30 instructors for specialist subjects and languages have been teaching more than 360 students at Merkur.

It was founded by the 100-year old Merkur Akademie International. This long-established educational institution started an international programme for secondary school graduates students at the beginning of the 80s. Moreover, as pioneer in Germany, it has been running joint bachelor programmes successfully with establishments of higher education abroad - mainly in Great Britain - since 1992. Cooperation programmes have already been established or are in the process of being set up with a large number of universities abroad.

Small groups, key competences

The personal and direct contact between professors and students and the small lectures with a maximum of 30 participants are two factors that enable students to complete their degree programmes successfully. Part of the instruction, focussing on the key competences required in business such as presentation and communication skills or foreign languages, is carried out in smaller groups.

Close contact to industry and practice-focussed programmes

The bachelor programme provides a close link between theory and practice with a project-based syllabus integrating practical experience in business, taught by instructors highly experienced in business, incorporating a practice-focused bachelor thesis and projects, events and excursions. The Karlsruhe Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a founding partner of Merkur International University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe, demonstrating the university’s close link to industry. In addition, Merkur is supported by prominent personalities from the economy, research, politics and business organisations.

Business and Cultural Studies, Foreign Languages

Merkur International University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe features a unique programme on the business and culture of regions abroad which are of interest to the German economy. This includes the acquisition of language skills in the key foreign languages spoken in the relevant region. We offer Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian.
